Teaching Philosophy
All our teachers are dedicated practitioners. Each brings vast knowledge and experience of the broad spectrum of Yoga traditions and all have completed extensive trainings to become certified Yoga teachers. Most are registered with the internationally recognized standards board, YOGA ALLIANCE. They are all passionate about yoga and the respectful sharing of the ancient sacred traditions of Yoga.
A unique relationship is developed between teacher and student. Your yoga teacher will lead you, but it is your journey to consciously follow. Developing constant practice, will open your understandings, and will allow you to elaborate on this ancient practice. Your teacher will initially guide you through the movements, but over time your practice will deepen past just the asanas.
Asansas are just 1 of the 8 limbs of the complete yoga practice. Through out your pratice at The Yoga Center you will explore all the limbs of yoga. Exploring your self will help you love life, love yoga, and most importantly love yourself.

Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga is a gentler form of yoga and is the most common type that concentrates on basic asanas. These asanas must be tandem with the correct breathing technique for the right effect. The amount of calories burnt while practicing Hatha Yoga is approximately 195 calories per hour.
Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga Yoga refers to a connotation of the eight limbs or the eight forms of spiritual practices as described in the Yoga Sutra or the yoga text. Ashtanga yoga is a set of six series and each series increases in difficulty in practice. Ashtanga yoga is also referred to as Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. The amount of calories burnt in practicing Ashtanga Yoga is approximately 300 calories per hour.
Vinyasa Yoga
Vinyasa yoga is an energizing form of yoga that links one yoga pose to another and creates a kind of fluidity in traditional yoga postures. The Vinyasa flow is especially apparent when practicing Surya Namaskar. The calories burnt during Vinyasa yoga is approximately 445 per hour
There is more to yoga than just weight loss and body rejuvenation. The basic importance of yoga is that it helps a person keep control of his or her subconscious mind and offers him or her, the rejuvenation of mind and spirit. This ancient art brings wellness as much as physical training. It can relieve the daily tensions and anxiety and bring relief to stress and other emotional problems. Now, this is not possible with other kinds of physical activities and exercises. Most of the physical exercises, muscle training programs and body building techniques, offer physical gain to an individual. Many health professionals believe that the benefits of yoga include spine health and lowers back pain, it will improve muscle tone as well as reduce stress all the while improving sleep.
If taken seriously and practiced regularly, one can feel immediate health improvements, as well as tone the figure and lose weight. There is no perfect time to start yoga. As the wise say It is better late than never, you can start yoga as young and as old as you want. In case, you plan to practice yoga late in your life;
it will strengthen your heart promote cardio vascular endurance and reduce the effects of arthritis while improving flexibility, blood flow and bring relief to minor joint pains. Yoga can cure many illnesses and you must trust this age-old tradition to benefit from it.
A common question people ask is "how many calories do I burn in each class?" We encourage you to concentrate and the whole body experience and not just weight loss - but if you are currently trying to keep track of calories/weightloss see the link below for a description of the calories lost per class.
HOW MANY CALORIES DO I BURN IN EACH CLASS?
15 WAYS YOGA CAN IMPOROVE YOUR HEALTH
Yoga not only develops the body, it also broadens the mental faculties. Yoga says that there is a connection between breathing and thoughts. When a person gets angry or upset, the breathing becomes shallow and irregular. When a person is relaxed, the breathing is deep and regular. When someone is concentrating very intently on say, a sound, s/he holds the breath. Through the practice of pranayama (control of the prana), the mind can be trained to relax through deep breathing and become focused while holding the breath. This practice will lead to control of the mind.
A common technique used in yoga is breathing through one nostril at a time. Electroencephalogram (EEG) studies of the electrical impulses of the brain have shown dial breathing through one nostril results in increased activity on the opposite side of the brain. Some experts suggest that the regular practice of breathing through one nostril may help improve communication between the right and left side of the brain. Other studies show this increased brain activity is associated with better performance and suggest that yoga can enhance cognitive performance. For example, a study of 23 men found that breathing through one nostril resulted in better performance of tasks associated with the opposite side of the brain.
Freeing the mind from mental disturbances, mental afflictions, and constant thought will result in the reduction of nervousness, irritability and confusion, depression and mental fatigue. Both mood and capacity for alertness, attentiveness and willingness to tackle problems revive. Traditional phrases, such as restored "spiritual vitality," intend to convey the complex idea of mental spryness, agreeableness, resiliency, and feelings of confidence and self-sufficiency. Many people will testify to attaining feelings of buoyancy and euphoria; these then provide a background or mood of well-being and assurance such that one naturally more fully enjoys both his ability and the worthiness of being more tolerant and generous
The extent to which these benefits may be expected will depend in part upon whether or not one can approach and participate in them willingly and wholeheartedly; for one who tries to practice postures with anxiety cripples his chances for very much benefit.
The ancient Yogis say that we were not born just to suffer, get sick and die. We are here to investigate and live by spiritual truths that govern all life. However, this spiritual investigation requires a keen intellect and strong will, products of a healthy mind and body. As long as one identifies with the body and mind, there will be worries, sorrows, anxieties, fear and anger. The practice of Yoga acts as a purification for our mind and body, so we can conduct a spiritual investigation of lifes purpose. This is important because the mind is where everything starts. Our attitude towards ourselves and the world around us determines how well we function and interact with others. By overcoming negative thought patterns and replacing them with positive ones, we can achieve peace of mind and happiness, which are essential for physical and mental health.
The advanced spiritual benefits of yoga include the psychic control, mind control and thought control. The relaxation in the thoughts will help you gain the knowledge. Along with improvement, the flexibility of the attitude of the person will also change. The experiences of yoga practicing people show that they became more compassionate about the surroundings and fellow beings. The control over the thoughts will help to suppress the materialistic pressures of the life. However the ultimate spiritual benefit of yoga will be the self realization. The understanding of self will help assure the healing of the pain of the body as well as the mind.
The rejuvenation of mind and health by practicing yoga will certainly benefit you and pave your path to spiritual liberation and salvation.

About Hot Yoga
Hot yoga is a cardiovascular workout that strengthens, tones, and stretches the muscles while calming the mind and reducing stress. Hot yoga is an ideal practice for flushing the body of toxins, increasing flexibility, and building core strength. Each class is conducted in a room with full circumference mirrors, allowing students to observe their progress and easily make adjustments to their alignment. All of our yoga classes are pre-set sequences of asanas, which allows for the practitioner to observe progress over time in a systematic way.
"You must cultivate your practice over an extended period of time; it must be steady, without gaps - and it must be done correctly - for then a firm foundation is laid" - Yoga Sutra
Regular practice helps improve concentration, balance, endurance, and alleviates fatigue. All postures can be modified to suit the individual. All classes include a deep relaxation (savasana) at the end of class.
Love Life. Love yourself. Love Yoga.
Hatha (Earth)
This class helps the students to set a solid understanding of their yoga practice. Through the supportive environment and a practice of basic yoga postures, this class helps promote flexibility while avoiding unnecessary injuries. The postures are taught in a slow, easy- to- follow pace, allowing the students to gain awareness and build strength. This class is great for beginners.
This series will help to help detoxify the organs, make the muscles more supple and challenge the mind. This practice will help to refresh and stimulate the whole body.
Vinyasa (Wind)
Vinyasa flow is a dynamic asana practice, combining movement with breath (and basic alignment). The breath and movement are synchronized, allowing the postures to form around the breath. Flow Yoga uses smooth transitions from pose to pose.
Ideal for those wishing to do a fluid, moving practice with internal heat. Most asanas are oriented towards opening and lengthening the muscles, strengthening the core, toning the internal organs and detoxifying. Attention to breath and intentional movement is emphasized.
The class focuses on the correct alignment of the more fundamental poses, allowing the student to experience how to properly flow into one pose, abide in the pose, and flow out of the pose in a safe and therapeutic environment. By integrating the inner and outer energies into a synchronized flow, the asana practice will become more meaningful and fun.
Ashtanga (Fire)
Ashtanga refers specifically to the eight spiritual practices outlined by the Yoga Sutra. This class is vigorous, and fast paced.
The intense energy of the group is really motivating, and encourages the constant movement from one pose into the next. Attending these classes will help to build strength, flexibility, and concentration. Each class will end with a meditative, deep relaxation. This class will give you the strength and confidence to attend Ashtanga classes anywhere in the world!

A little note from Amanda:
The healing virtues of yoga are what kept me coming back to this ancient discipline. The results have been life-changing, physically, emotionally and spiritually. As a young girl, I had a strong sense of adventure, curiosity, and imagination. You could always find me climbing trees or monkeying around at the playground.
In 1998, I broke my pelvis in a motor vehicle accident and was unable to walk unassisted for three months, but the side effects lasted much longer. After that, yoga became the catalyst in my recovery. Over the last ten years, yoga has helped me persevere through lifes challenges and for this I am forever grateful.
I am now at a more grounded time in my life and am honoured to share this invaluable gift of yoga with others. And when I step onto my mat, I am reconnected with that playful young girl, ready to explore and discover all that my body and mind can do!
Namaste.
Graham has, throughout his life, been drawn towards the things behind things, and after a foray into the sacred movement of Taoist Tai Chi, began to explore the path of Yoga in 2004, and has been continuously captivated by the blessings, challenges, purpose and harmony that it has brought to his life. Certified as a Yin & Hatha Yoga Instructor after spending time with teachers in British Columbia and Hawaii, Graham enjoys creating an atmosphere of warmth and stillness in his personal practice, which has allowed him to do so in his classes. Our lives demand such a myriad of mental and emotional calisthenics as we move through each day, and the gift of being able hold space together and let all this silt settle, so that we may see clearly into the warm still centre of ourselves and one another, is one to be cherished. Let's explore together.
Sophie, ever questioning the human experience, set out on an adventure to explore what connects us to the many wonders of the world:
Part of this journey was training as a professional dancer at the Laban Dance Conservatoire in London. Then, after touring internationally with the Taudevin Dance Company, Sophie moved to Edmonton where she taught and performed contemporary dance with Mile Zero while qualifying as a Holistic Health Practitioner. At the centre of this adventure has always been the calm, inspiring truth of yoga.
It is the force of this truth that took Sophie to India to study the source of yoga in the hopes of sharing its wisdom. Sophie is the co-author of the kid's yoga book, "Yoga Monkey and the Search for the Prana Banana" and hope's Yoga Monkey can be a way for families to share the benefits of yoga.
A little from Sophie:
"Although, I have traveled many continents, it is yoga that brings me home. Home to my self, to my truth, to the power and beauty of love that lies in all of us, where ever we are, in every present moment."
A little note from Jess:
I was introduced to yoga in the Ashtanga tradition, primarily as a complement to an already active lifestyle. I wanted to get that rumored yoga flexibility, I wanted to touch my toes! I got way more than that. Immediately drawn into the practice, it felt as if I had finally found what I had been searching for without even knowing I was looking for something. Each class left me not only with a happy body (touching my toes, too!) but with a sensation of bliss and freedom that surprised me. I had found the beginnings of a physical, mental and spiritual harmony I had unknowingly been craving.
Being on my mat is a humbling experience and everyday I continue to learn and feel myself becoming exactly who I am supposed to be. I could not be happier to have the opportunity to share this wonderful journey with my students and help them to develop a greater body and spiritual awareness, allowing them to find their own path and the beauty that is in this, ever present moment.
Live in love.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
